NICARAGUA: PROTECT WOMEN'S RIGHTS DEFENDERS

When, in 2003, a nine-year-old girl was raped and became pregnant, members of the Nicaraguan women’s movement helped her to obtain a legal abortion. Now, nine of the women who helped her are facing legal proceedings after a complaint was lodged against them. We fear that the complaint is due to the women's human rights work and their commitment to ensuring that women and girls have access to safe and effective sexual health services.
