The Country Coordinator for Russia, Barrie, organised a photo action in support of Individual at Risk Case, Maria Ponomarenko, on World Press Freedom Day.
The Country Coordinator for North America, Lise, is part of the Close Guantanamo Network. They have monthly vigils on Parliament Square, twice a year in front of the American Embassy and an annual march to Trafalgar Square around the anniversary of the opening of the Guantánamo detention centre.
On the 2nd December 2023 the Country Coordinator for Central and Eastern Europe, Ulrike, held a demonstration outside the Embassy of Poland in support of Justyna Wydrzynska (Write for Rights case) and the right of women to access safe and legal abortions.
Our new Country Coordinator for Egypt, Diana, put her graphic skills to good use in designing posts for the North Africa team’s social media pages for Human Rights Day and International Women's Day!
The North Africa team have organised demonstrations for Alaa Abdelfattah outside the FCDO and a vigil for him and the murdered Italian student Gulio Regini, outside the Egyptian embassy in the last few years
The Country Coordinator for Morocco, Western Sahara and Tunisia, Bev, worked with Amnesty UK staff to bring Ali Aarrass, imprisoned in Morocco for 12 years, to the UK to speak at our National Conference in 2023. The North Africa team worked on his case for the majority of the time that he was imprisoned.
The North Africa team worked with Olive Branch Arts and local Amnesty groups in 2023 to show an exhibition of photos taken by Sahrawi young people in the refugee camps in Algeria. Exhibitions were held in Croydon, Ipswich, Sidmouth ( as part of the Sidmouth Festival), at Ely cathedral and in Harringay.
Chris, the Country Coordinator for Turkiye, worked with students to collect photos at Falmouth Pride expressing solidarity with the banned Istanbul Pride march.
One of the China Country Coordinators, Nabila, co-organised the 2022 and 2023 June 4th vigils, along with China Diaspora groups, to commemorate the anniversary of Tiananmen Square.
