On 3rd December 2024, the United Nations Special Rapporteur, Francesca Albanese, spoke to us about the findings of her latest report, Genocide as Colonial Erasure in which she examines the unfolding horrors in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. While the wholesale destruction of Gaza continues unabated, other parts of the land have also not been spared. Exploring the violence that Israel has unleashed against the Palestinians post-7 October as part of a long-term intentional, systematic, State-organised forced displacement and replacement of the Palestinians, Francesca Albanese talked about the risk of causing irreparable prejudice to the very existence of the Palestinian people in Palestine, and how and why we must insist on the genocide framing, especially if we are to prevent any further atrocities that will undoubtedly scar our human history.
Amnesty International has found sufficient basis to conclude that Israeli authorities committed, and continue to commit prohibited acts under the Genocide Convention.
Amnesty’s report analyses the Israeli authorities’ policies and military actions in the occupied Gaza Strip (Gaza) in the context of the military offensive they launched in the wake of the attacks on Israel carried out by Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups on 7 October 2023. It assesses them within the framework of genocide under international law, finding that there is sufficient evidence to conclude that Israel’s conduct amounts to genocide.
