I call on the Prime Minister to stop the cuts and instead build a fair, compassionate social security system that protects everyone.

1) Make sure that social security is set at a level that covers the real costs of essentials.

2) Commit to consulting and working alongside people who claim social security to make the system work for those who need it.

3) Commit to protecting human rights so no one lives in poverty.

Prime Minister: Stop the Cuts

No one should be punished for needing support. But, the UK Government has announced more cuts to social security, continuing over a decade of decisions that have crushed the systems that people rely on to stay afloat.

Since 2010, social security has been chipped away bit by bit. Now the same political choices are being made again. Choices that will hit the most marginalised hardest and push more people into crisis.

We’ve spoken to people who had their social security payment reduced because they missed a call or were late to a job centre appointment. Even when there was good reason.

When that support is taken away or isn’t set at a level that covers even the basics, the impact doesn't hit all at once. It ripples. Then come the impossible choices: eat less, stop using the lights or heating, borrow money. That is the domino effect.

It can happen to any of us. For example, falling ill, a missed payday, a rent rise - these aren’t rare. They’re real and they happen to so many of us. That's why we need a social security system that protects people, not punishes them.

Instead, people who are ill and disabled are facing cuts that will push them further into poverty and insecurity.

Social security is not a political gift, it is a human right, a right that is being dismantled right in front of us. Call on the Prime Minister to stop the cuts and build a fair, compassionate social security system that supports everyone instead.
