Falun Gong

I have been trying to understand why the government of China tries so hard to suppress Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa. It is a practice involving slow gentle movements and meditation. Three of its key values are truth, compassion and tolerance.  Where is the threat in that?  They are three values that the Chinese government should adopt!  Is there any other government in the world that sees Falun Gong as an "evil cult"? Maybe the Falun Gong movement is seen as a threat just because it is popular and has been able to organise large demonstrations such as one on 25 April 1999 in Beijing.

Yesterday's BBC television news carried a report by Rupert Wingfield-Hayes about executed prisoners being used as a source of organs for transplants. He secretly recorded conversation with a doctor who admitted that organs come from executed prisoners and also said that before important national days such as 1 October there were more organs available; more people are executed for rocking the boat at such times. I do not think that the report mentioned Falun Gong but it did include the fact that China executes more people than the rest of the world put together.

Update, Nov. 2008:  Barend ter Haar is a researcher at Leiden University in the Netherlands and has a website on Falun Gong and the persecution of the followers of the movement.
Further Update, Dec. 2013:  Barend ter Haar is now at the University of Oxford but the link above still works.
