Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS and other diseases
The Millennium Development Goals, to be achieved by 2015 which is now only 5 years away, include this one:
Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases.
Malaria can be controlled with technology as simple as bed nets to keep mosquitoes away. Recently the distribution of nets in Uganda paid for by charity donations from the UK was shown on TV. Also drug treatment needs to be offered for those infected, including young children.
Another infection mentioned in the targets is tuberculosis.
The great challenge is HIV/AIDS and in some places such as in some African countries the scale of the epidemic is difficult for us in Europe to appreciate. One way to limit the spread of the infection is to ensure that people are well-informed. Another is to promote the use of condoms to make it less likely to be transmitted sexually.
Our blogs are written by Amnesty International staff, volunteers and other interested individuals, to encourage debate around human rights issues. They do not necessarily represent the views of Amnesty International.
