Humanitarian disaster in Congo
Amnesty says that more resources are needed for the UN peacekeepers in Congo.
The war in eastern Congo seems to be related to the Rwandan genocide – that conflict will just not go away. Huge numbers of people are moving to try to escape the fighting and they are desperately short of food.
I was glad to hear that the Foreign Secretary of the UK, David Miliband, flew to the area to discuss what needs to be done.
I visited eastern Congo more than 20 years ago but it was peaceful then. Rwanda was the next country that I visited and it also seemed peaceful then so the genocide (on which I wrote before) some years later was a shock to me; maybe if I had known more history it would not have come as such a surprise.
