An inspiring story from Liberia, on More4
Charles Taylor, former president of Liberia in west Africa, is on trial in the Hague accused of war crimes. How was he overthrown? It was largely thanks to the women of Liberia, as shown in True Stories: Pray the Devil Back to Hell, shown on More4 on 22 September 2009. It was described in the Radio Times as a superb, uplifting film.
The film showed how the women of Liberia got organised and used their power. They declared that they were sick of war and wanted peace. Christian and Moslem women put aside their differences and pulled together. They kept thinking about the best tactics and they showed great courage and persistence. At one stage they surrounded leaders to stop them leaving talks until they reached agreement. When they had succeeded in stopping the war they realised that they wanted to influence what kind of peaceful development their country followed.
