Liberia: still a long way to go
Tonight's Unreported World on Channel 4 showed many girls in Liberia who had suffered terrible ordeals of rape. Visiting Monrovia's central prison the programme could only find one man who had been convicted of rape with an under-age girl. This prisoner claimed that he had been wrongly convicted, but gave reasons why he said men might rape young girls.
I wrote recently about a film that gave a positive view of the country, of women finding the power to overcome the fighting. However, Liberia clearly has a long way to go to shake off the legacy of lawlessness from the civil war.
