Vigil at Fort Benning, Georgia: Justice in the Americas
Despite my advice to Barack Obama the School of the Americas has not been closed down so it is time to protest again, on 20 to 22 November 2009.
From all over the USA and from further away in the Americas thousands are converging at Fort Benning this weekend. I would converge if I could but it is a long way from here in the UK to Fort Benning, Georgia in the USA. There will be a vigil for justice in the Americas and to remember all the victims of the human rights abuses done by people who have attended courses at the School of the Americas. It takes a long time to read out the names of all those who have been killed. See SOAW ( School of the Americas Watch).
When Barack Obama became president I was hopeful that the foreign policy of the USA would become more rational and less aggressive. He seems to have been more conciliatory towards the Arab world (at least in speeches) but what about Latin America?
Our blogs are written by Amnesty International staff, volunteers and other interested individuals, to encourage debate around human rights issues. They do not necessarily represent the views of Amnesty International.
