What is the course about?
Unlock the transformative power of words with Amnesty International UK’s 'Words that Burn: human rights and poetry workshop'. Co-delivered by award winning poet Deanna Rodger and AIUK Education Officer, Sita Kenyon.
Words that Burn is Amnesty International UK’s flagship creative education programme; it aims to empower people to explore and take action for human rights through poetry. As part of this programme, Amnesty International UK have joined forces with CityLit to deliver a two hour interactive workshop.
Join us as we explore the relationship between poetic expression and social justice and delve into the power of creativity as a form of activism.
What will we cover?

By the end of this course you should be able to... - to embed a human rights approach to your practice - explore the emotive force of poetry to amplify human rights narratives, and - to provoke thought, ignite empathy, and inspire action by others.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This is an introductory course. A good level of spoken and written English is needed. Beginners are very welcome in this class.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
You will be taught be Sita Kenyon and Deanna Rodger, via lecture, discussion, group work and sharing ideas. Ground rules will be set to create an inclusive environment in which everyone will feel welcome.

This means that learners are encouraged to make their tutor and classmates aware in advance if any writing they wish to share contains material that may be deemed sensitive. If you are unsure about what might constitute sensitive content, please ask your tutor for further clarification and read our expectations for participating in writing courses at City Lit.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
There are no additional costs, but please bring pen(cil) and paper or a digital equivalent for notetaking . When I've finished, what course can I do next? City Lit has a range of poetry classes, ranging from our introductory Ways into Poetry course through to our Advanced Poetry Workshop.
