Agnes unexpectedly released

“The Rwanda team is pleased to announce that Agnes Uwimana Nkusi was released from detention on 18 June 2014.

Agnes Uwimana Nkusi, Editor of the independent Kinyarwanda tabloid newspaper Umurabyo, has served four years in prison for publishing opinion pieces criticizing government policies and alleging corruption in the run-up to the 2010 presidential elections.

The Rwanda team would like to thank all Amnesty International sections and members who campaigned and lobbied for her release.

The case file will be closed soon and Sections should stop all campaigning activities on her behalf.”

So she was released 3 weeks early, serving just under 4 years. At one stage she was facing 17 years in prison.

Definitely time to celebrate!

In early July I will ask you one more time to let me know what you’ve been up to for Agnes between April and June and then I will feed back to you (and AIUK staff) one last document that shows how much activity we collectively managed on her behalf since the case was opened.

Many thanks for your support and friendship,

Rona
