About this group
The Hornsey and Wood Green Amnesty group was set up in 1978 and covers Hornsey, Wood Green, Crouch End, Highgate and Muswell Hill. We currently have about 30 members and supporters.
Amnesty International is at the forefront of the human rights movement globally, but it can only do its work through members, staff and local groups.
This Group is one over 280 in the UK. Our main aims are to campaign and raise awareness about human rights issues by putting pressure on governments, companies and institutions about individuals at risk, and also to work on broader human rights issues. We are currently involved in a number of Amnesty campaigns including stop torture, my body my rights, the death penalty, and the North African Regional Action Network (NAFRAN) (see separate post). We also have adopted two Prisoners of Conscience (husband and wife) in China and write to the authorities on their behalf.
Our meetings have a set agenda through which we discuss current campaigns and organise events. We often also have a letter-writing session at the end of each meeting (using cases highlighted in the Amnesty magazine.
We are delighted to welcome new members to our friendly, lively and active Group. We have a substantial history of vigorous campaigning and successful fundraising to support the work of Amnesty International, and we benefit from having a range of members of different ages, backgrounds and interests.
The Group has set an annual (calendar year) voluntary membership subscription of £5 that goes towards postage, expenses for two members to attend the AIUK AGM annually, and setting up campaigns and fundraising activities during the year.
You can help in a variety of ways to suit your time, skills and inclinations by:
