Manchester Amnesty Weekly Action and News

Please do this action and make a difference

On 3 December 2024, Moussa Tchangari, a human rights defender and secretary general of the civil society organization Citizens’ Alternative Spaces, was arrested in Niamey, Niger’s capital. He was at his home when at least three gunmen in plain clothes, who claimed to be policemen, arrested him. For nearly two days, Moussa Tchangari’s whereabouts remained unknown. On 5 December 2024, he was located at the Central Service for Combating Terrorism and Organized Transnational Crime, in Niamey. He has been charged, amongst other things, with advocating terrorism and criminal association in connection with terrorism. Niger’s authorities must drop all charges and immediately release Moussa Tchangari, who is being detained solely for the peaceful exercise of his human rights. Click the link below to send an email to the President of the Department for Safeguarding Homeland Security, demanding Moussa Tchangari’s immediate release.

Good news

Zimbabwe December 31, 2024, President Emmerson Mnangagwa signed into law the abolition of the death penalty for all ordinary crimes.

United States of America - December 31, 2024, Ridah Bin Saleh al-Yazidi, who had been held without charge or trial in the Guantanamo Bay detention centre since the day of its opening, January 11, 2002, was transferred to Tunisia.

Angola, January 1, 2025. Did you recently take action for Tiktoker Ana da Silva Miguel, known as "Neth Nahara", whose case was included in Amnesty International's "Write for Rights" 2024 campaign, and who had been sentenced in 2023 to two years in prison for "insulting" the president during a live broadcast? On New Year’s Day, the 50th anniversary of Angola’s independence, President João Lourenço issued a pardon, thereby releasing Neth from the remainder of her sentence. Several days later, 4 other Angolans who had also been wrongly imprisoned for criticising the government, were also released.

Italy - January 4, 2025, the Court of Catania declared invalid the detention of an Egyptian citizen who was awaiting accelerated repatriation. The decision cited arguments, including those of Amnesty International, suggesting that Egypt cannot be considered a safe country.
