Moujib al-Mikhlafi, a Yemeni education expert and trainer, has been arbitrarily detained by the Huthi de facto authorities since 10 October 2023 in Sana’a, Yemen, accused of but not yet charged with being a member of a “spy network,” an offence which carries the death penalty. He has been held incommunicado, with no access to legal representation, and has spent 3 months in solitary confinement.

Good news
United States of America - On September 26, 2024, the governor of Delaware signed Act 70 officially abolishing the death penalty.
Japan - On October 8, 2024, the prosecution decided not to appeal against the verdict of innocence of September 26 in favour of Hamakada Iwao, who was wrongfully sentenced to hanging for a murder that took place in 1968 and who had spent over 45 years on death row.
UN/Saudi Arabia – On October 10, 2024, Saudi Arabia failed to secure a seat on the 47-member United Nations Human Rights Council in a vote on the three-year term beginning in January 2025.
Iran - On October 12, 2024, the Supreme Court overturned the death sentence of Iranian Kurdish human rights defender and independent trade unionist Sharifeh Mohammadi, ordering a retrial. She had been sentenced to hang in June 2024 on the false charge of "armed rebellion against the state".
Venezuela - On 11 October 2024, the United Nations Human Rights Council renewed the mandate of the United Nations Fact-Finding Mission in Venezuela for two years, tasked with monitoring and reporting on serious human rights violations taking place in the country.
