Manchester Amnesty Weekly Action and News

Please do this action and make a difference

This week’s action is easy to do. Please follow the link below to print out a “Solidarity with Palestine. End the Genocide” poster and display it prominently on Friday 29th November, which is the UN International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian people. Please ask your friends to do the same, with a view to taking this message into every street, neighbourhood and community. Or place a picture of your poster on social media. If you do not have access to a printer, you could draw or paint a copy of the poster. It’s a very simple design.

Good news

Libya - On October 22, 2024, activist and blogger Maryam Mansour al-Warfalli, known as Nakhia Fezzan, was released from prison after more than nine months of arbitrary detention. She had been arrested on January 13, 2024 by the Internal Security Agency of the government of eastern Libya for criticizing on social media the management of cooking gas distribution in the southern part of the country.

India - On 6 November 2024, the Supreme Court declared that the demolition of homes without due process is "unacceptable". The practice had been denounced by Amnesty International as illegal, arbitrary, punitive and discriminatory in that it mainly affects people of the Muslim religion. The Court subsequently issued guidelines on demolitions that must be complied with throughout the country.

Italy - On 11 November 2024, the Court of Rome suspended the validation of the detentions of seven migrants from Egypt and Bangladesh who had been detained in the Albanian centre of Gjader, referring the case back to the European Court of Justice. In the absence of validation of the detention within 48 hours, they were taken to Italy.

Turkey - On 13 November 2024, after action by Amnesty International, parliament renounced for a second time the so-called "Law on Agents of Influence", which would have constrained actions by civil society organisations which are deemed to be "the interests of foreign groups or states".

Israel – On November 21st, 2024, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant for crimes against humanity and war crimes against the Palestinian people.
