Write for Rights in Minehead

Adressed and stamped envelopes
Letters ready for posting

Members of the Minehead Amnesty International Group met on 5 November to write letters in connection with the 2024 Write for Rights Campaign, which focuses on nine people from different countries who are facing human rights violations and injustice. Eight of us wrote 37 letters in an hour and a half! We covered all nine cases in the campaign booklet, with the most letters going to Angola and Turkiye.

Most of the people featured in the campaign have been imprisoned without trial or after an unfair trial, for peacefully expressing their political or religious views, for taking part in peaceful demonstrations, or for campaigning on social, disability and women’s rights. Many are being tortured and kept in harsh conditions. Since Write for Rights started in 2001, millions of people from around the world have taken part by signing cards to prisoners and writing letters to the authorities. Over the last 20 years, more than 100 people featured in the campaign have seen positive outcomes in their cases.

There will be another chance for Amnesty members and the public to take part in the campaign on Friday 6 December when we will be signing cards and letters from 1330 to 1500 at the Quaker Meeting House, Bancks Street, Minehead. Further details about the cases will be provided. For more information about the Minehead Group look for our latest newsletter on this website or contact us by emailing amnestyminehead@gmail.com
