Shackelia Jackson
On 20 January 2014, Shackelia Jackson’s brother, Nakiea, was shot dead by police officers who allege that he pointed a gun at them first. However, witnesses say Nakiea, a cook, making lunch for a local blood bank at the time, was unarmed. A police officer was charged over the killing, but a preliminary inquiry was dismissed in July 2016 after a witness failed to appear in court. The witness later told the Jackson family that they were too scared to attend.
Despite a campaign of harassment, intimidation and threats of violence against her, her family, and witnesses to the attack, Shackeila refuses to give up her fight for justice for her brother.
