Modern Slavery is closer than you think

Holy Trinity Church Stratford on Avon is hosting an evening with Bishop Alastair Redfern at 7.30 p.m. on Wednesday 27th November in the church. Bishop Alastair will discuss the issue of Modern Slavery and the impact it has on thousands of lives in both rural and urban communities. The evening is free but there will be a retiring collection to support the Clewer Initiative, a national project linked to the Church of England working to tackle modern slavery.

Here in Stratford on Avon we are not immune from the scourge of modern slavery, in July this year a man was arrested in our town driving a van which contained twenty people suspected of being held as slaves. Also a local farmer inadvertently had two workers, through a licensed recruitment agency who were discovered to be part of a Modern Slavery network.

The Rt Revd Dr Alastair Redfern (retired Bishop of Derby), as a member of the House of Lords, has worked on the Select Committee for the Modern Slavery Bill 2015 which was only the second piece of anti-slavery legislation in British History since 1807 and the first in Europe. He founded the Clewer Initiative and is an engaging and charismatic speaker.
