BBC Documentary - Inside the Iranian Uprising - 29 June 2023
Sutton Amnesty were alerted to the screening of a very powerful BBC documentary called "Inside the Iranian Uprising", broadcast on 29 June 2023.
In September 2022, a 22-year-old Iranian girl, Mahsa Amini, died in police custody. She had been arrested by Iran’s religious police, accused of not wearing her hijab properly. The authorities said she had died of a heart attack, but rumours spread that she had been beaten on arrest. Citizens took to the streets in their thousands in fury.
The documentary is an extraordinary and shocking insight into what has been happening across Iran, revealing a regime under huge pressure and resorting to extreme cruelty to control its citizens.
This programme is available on BBC iPlayer and is definitely worth watching. Please see the weblink below:

Amnesty International has published several reports and press releases on Iran in the last few months, the most recent of which can be found here https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2023/08/iran-respect-families-right-to-commemorate-loved-ones-killed-during-uprising-without-reprisals-on-one-year-anniversary/
Amnesty is calling for the Iranian authorities to respect families’ right to commemorate loved ones killed during uprising without reprisals on the one-year anniversary of Mahsa Amini’s death.
“In view of the systematic impunity in Iran, Amnesty International also calls on all states to exercise universal jurisdiction and issue arrest warrants for Iranian officials, including those with command responsibility, who are reasonably suspected of criminal responsibility for crimes under international law committed during and in the aftermath of the uprising,” said Diana Eltahawy, Amnesty International’s Deputy Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa.
