Tiananmen Square 35th Anniversary Protest - 2 June 2024

Our Chair attended an Amnesty-organised event in Parliament Square commemorating the 35th Anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre. This was well attended, with about 250-300 people, mostly Chinese and Hong Kongers. Sacha Deshmukh, our AIUK CEO, gave a good speech, as did Zhou Fengsuo, a student protest leader who lost many friends in the massacre. He became China’s fifth most wanted protester and eventually was able to start a new life in the USA.

There was also a staged re-enactment of a speaker being arrested, which caught the crowd by surprise, and was a bit too realistic!
