Uyghur film "All Static & Noise" - 22 September 2024
On 22 September, our Chair attended a screening of the excellent film “All Static & Noise” at Amnesty UK's office (the Human Rights Action Centre or HRAC).
The film is a groundbreaking and very moving documentary about atrocities committed against the Uyghur and Kazakh peoples in China. In particular, it tells the story of one of Amnesty’s Individuals at Risk cases, Ilham Tohti, who was sentenced to life in prison. After the screening, we were fortunate to hear from Uyghur scholar and researcher Abduweli Ayup, and Jewher Ilham, daughter of Ilham Tohti - both of whom featured in the film - as well as producer/writer Janice Englehart.
In 2021, Amnesty published a 160-page report detailing the systematic state-organised mass imprisonment, torture and persecution perpetrated by the Chinese authorities in the region, saying it amounted to crimes against humanity.
