Next Meeting, 19 December 2017, 7pm: Write for Rights

Our next meeting will take place on Tuesday 19 December 2017 at 7 pm, St Peter's Church, 119 Eaton Square, SW1W 9AL (near Victoria station).

On 10 December is Human Rights Day. Every December Amnesty International asks its supporters to join a global letter writing campaign "Write for Rights". We are encouraged to write messages of support to people around the world who have suffered injustice or are in prison for standing up for human rights.

Amnesty International UK focuses this year on these 10 cases:

1. Shackelia Jackson, Jamaica

Demanding justice for her brother

2. Azza Soliman, Egypt

Women's rights lawyer faces imprisonment

3. Dr Mudawi Ibrahim Adam, Sudan

Jailed for exposing abuses

4. Sakris Kupila, Finland

Denied legal gender recognition

5. The Istanbul 10, Turkey

Amnesty Turkey staff targeted

6. Ni Yulan, China

Housing activist under attack

7. Xulhaz Mannan, Bangladesh

LGBTIQ activists killed

8. Issa Amro and Farid al-Atrash, Israel/Occupied Palestinian Territories

Peaceful protesters face military trial

9. Immigration detainees, UK

Thousands held indefinitely

10. Esmail Abdi, Iran

Trade unionists at risk

Amnesty International Westminster Bayswater will join the Write for Rights campaign and will have a letter and card writing event on 19 December, 7 pm.

Even if you are not a regular member of Amnesty International Westminster Bayswater we would like to invite you to join us for this evening.

If you want to come drop us an e-mail. We just want to have a rough idea how many people will come.

Please bring some cards with you. You can bring Christmas cards and secular cards. For some cases religious cards are fine, for other cases Amnesty International recommends secular cards. Also for some cases it is recommended not to mention "Amnesty International". Therefore please bring not cards which you bought via Amnesty International. If you do not have cards, do not worry, just come and join us.

Because our meeting is such a short time before Christmas, please bring something to eat or something to drink with you. We will have tea, we hope that people will bring mince piece, Christmas biscuits and other seasonal treats.

If you want to know more about the Write for Rights campaign and what you can write and what you should not write, then please have a look at the Write for Rights Campaign Booklet

We hope that many of you will be able to join us and support prisoners of conscience and human rights defenders with your messages of solidarity.
