Next Meeting, 12 December 2023, 6.45pm: Write for Rights (changed date)
Our next meeting will take place on Tuesday 12 December 2023 at 6.45 pm, St Peter's Church, 119 Eaton Square, SW1W 9AL (near Victoria station). Please be aware of the date. We decided to meet this month on the second instead of the third Tuesday in the months.
On 10 December is Human Rights Day. Every December Amnesty International asks its supporters to join a global letter writing campaign "Write for Rights". We are encouraged to write messages of support to people around the world who have suffered injustice or are in prison for standing up for human rights. If you speak with people who were in prison, then all confirm how important it was for them to get letters and messages of support and to realise that they are not alone in their struggle for human rights.
Amnesty International UK focuses this year on 10 cases with a particular focus on children and young people. You can find more information on Amnesty UK website about the campaign.
Amnesty International Westminster Bayswater will join the Write for Rights campaign and will have a letter and card writing event on 12 December, 6.45 pm.
We are particularly excited about this year, because Ahmed Mansoor (UAE) is one of the cases. The group has been working on this case and campaigning for Ahmed vor years and we are very happy that there will be a spotlight on his case this year. He was arrested on 20 March 2017 and has already spent more than six years in prison on trumped up charges. He has spent all the time in solitary confinement, with almost no contact to the outside world.
Even if you are not a regular member of Amnesty International Westminster Bayswater we would like to invite you to join us for this evening.
If you want to come drop us an e-mail. We just want to have a rough idea how many people will be coming.
Please bring some cards with you. You can bring Christmas cards and secular cards. This year Amnesty International recommends for most of the cases secular cards, this means the cards can mention Christmas, but should not have religious motives. Also for some cases it is recommended not to mention "Amnesty International". Therefore please bring not only cards which you bought via Amnesty International. If you do not have cards, do not worry, just come and join us. We had last year plenty of cards for everyone.
Because our meeting is such a short time before Christmas, please bring something to eat or something to drink with you. We hope to have tea and we hope that people will bring mince piece, Christmas biscuits and other seasonal treats.
If you want to know more about the Write for Rights campaign and what you can write and what you should not write, then please have a look at the Write for Rights Campaign Booklet.
We hope that many of you will be able to join us and support prisoners of conscience and human rights defenders with your messages of solidarity.
