Amnesty International's Secretary General to visit Ukraine and Russia
Salil Shetty, Secretary General of Amnesty International, will visit Ukraine and Russia between 7-10 September and will be available for interview.
The visit comes amid:
- Violations of human rights and international humanitarian law committed by all sides in the conflict in eastern Ukraine
- Mounting evidence about Russia’s alleged role in the conflict
- Calls for Ukraine to tackle its long-standing culture of impunity for police abuses
- Increasing attacks in Russia on the rights to freedom of expression, to assembly and to association
In July, Amnesty published evidence of savage beatings and other torture meted out to activists, protesters and journalists in eastern Ukraine. The briefing, Abductions and Torture in Ukraine, documented allegations of abduction and torture perpetrated by separatist armed groups as well as pro-Kiev forces.
