UK: Amnesty welcomes High Court blow to secret evidence regime
Amnesty International UK today (1 December) welcomed a High Court decision against the government’s use of secret evidence to deny people bail. Amnesty International UK Campaigns Director Tim Hancock said: “Today’s ruling is yet another blow to the government’s attempts to lock people up on the basis of secret evidence. It’s a welcome ruling for anyone who believes in human rights and the rule of law. “The government does not have the right to detain people without giving them a fair trial. That has been spelled out by the UK’s highest courts, in today’s judgement and the earlier ruling on Control Orders. “Yet still the system of secret evidence and special advocates continues. It’s amazing that our government is so determined to cling on to these Kafkaesque tactics.”
