UK: More protest restrictions will further undermine basic human rights
‘Criminalising demonstrations outside Parliament in the name of protecting democracy is ludicrous’ - Tom Southerden
In response to reports that the Government is considering the introduction of new restrictions on protest, Tom Southerden, Amnesty International UK’s Law and Human Rights Director, said:
“Criminalising demonstrations outside Parliament in the name of protecting democracy is ludicrous and would be one more step towards crushing the freedoms that are the cornerstone of our democracy.
“It’s vital that the rights to freedom of peaceful protest and expression are upheld - this is absolutely fundamental to any free and fair society.
“While genuine intimidation is unacceptable, this proposal is dangerous and the latest in a series of draconian measures that strengthen police powers at the expense of crucial and long-held freedoms.
“Politicians and Government must not ignore the important role that strong political disagreement plays - we must be wary of anyone who conflates protection with silencing protest, this should be resisted by MPs and anyone who values living in a democratic society.”
