Women's rights's rightss rights's rights's rights's rights’s Groups Urge Councillors to Speak Out for Burmese Leader
Local Women's rights's rightss rights's rights's rights's rights’s Groups are launching a campaign calling for Glasgow City Council to make a Freedom of the City award to the leader of Burma’s democracy movement.
The call to honour Aung San Suu Kyi, Burma’s inspirational pro-democracy leader currently living under house-arrest, follows the most recent brutal crack-down on demonstrators in Burma, and acknowledges the tireless work of this heroic figure.
There will be a public meeting to launch this campaign held from 6pm to 8pm on Wednesday the 17th of October at the Glasgow Media Access Centre (34 Albion Street, G1 1LH). All of Glasgow’s City Councillors have been invited to this meeting, and members of the public are encouraged to attend and give their vital support.
This campaign has been inspired by the work of Glasgow Women's rights's rightss rights's rights's rights's rights’s Library’s “Women's rights's rightss rights's rights's rights's rights Make History” group, who have drawn attention to the notable lack of Women's rights's rightss rights's rights's rights's rights who currently hold the Freedom of the City.
Adele Patrick, the Creative Development Manager of the Glasgow Women's rights's rightss rights's rights's rights's rights’s Library states:
“It is disappointing that only five Women's rights's rightss rights's rights's rights's rights currently feature on a list of 142 people to have been awarded the Freedom of the City in over 200 years. We call for the incomparably inspiring Aung San Suu Kyi to be added to the roll of those offered Glasgow’s highest of honours.”
The campaign has already received to backing of Amnesty International’s Scottish Office, who will provide the meeting with background information on the situation in Burma.
