Amnesty International UK, PRCBC, ILPA and the3million briefing on British Nationality (Regularisation of Past Practice) Bill 2022-2023

Amnesty International UK, the Project for the Registration of Children as British Citizens (PRCBC), the Immigration Law Practitioners' Association (ILPA) and the3million have jointly produced this briefing for House of Commons consideration of the British Nationality (Regularisation of Past Practice) Bill.

This bill is to protect the British citizenship of children born in the UK before 2 October 2000 to parents then exercising free movement rights; and to protect the British citizenship rights of descendants. The unusual circumstances that cause this bill to be necessary require its retrospective application as explained in this briefing so as to ensure that, whatever may be the outcome of ongoing litigation, people who have been recognised as British citizens for years and decades are not put at risk of being arbitrarily deprived of their citizenship.
