Joint Amnesty UK letter to Minister on British Nationality Act 1981 (Immigration Rules Appendix EU) (Amendment) Regulations 2021

The Government has laid regulations intended to take effect from 1 July 2021 that will amend the British Nationality Act 1981 so that, in specified circumstances, a child born on or after that date to an EU citizen parent will automatically acquire British citizenship if and when that parent is granted settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme.

Together with the Project for the Registration of Children as British Citizens (PRCBC) and the3million, Amnesty UK has written to the Minister responsible to welcome the proposed change and to ask for information about the steps the Home Office is taking to ensure that the affected children are not effectively deprived of their British citizenship by lack of awareness or capacity to demonstrate their acquisition of citizenship.
