Joint Briefing on Amendment 5 (international human rights law compliance) to Government HL Bill 148
57 organisations have joined together in support of amendment 5 to the Government's immigration bill (HL Bill 148). That amendment would replace clause 1 of this bill with a provision to ensure that nothing in the bill requires the Home Secretary to act (or not act) in a way that would breach the obligations of the UK under specified international human rights law - including the Refugee Convention and the European Convention on Human Rights.
More on why this amendment is needed is provided by the explanation in the joint Amnesty and ILPA briefing that explains the Bill's current structure, purpose and how it would work (including the overriding effect of clause 1).
