Urgent Action update: Chinese activist on hunger strike at grave risk

Jailed Chinese Human Rights Defender Yang Maodong (better known by his pen name Guo Feixiong) has been on hunger strike since 9 May in protest of his ill-treatment by the authorities.

Urgent Action update: Iranian prisoner of conscience ends hunger strike

Iranian human rights defender Narges Mohammadi, a prisoner of conscience, ended her hunger strike after 20 days on 16 July when she was allowed a 30-minute telephone call with her children.

Urgent Action update: Four executed, ten still at risk in Indonesia

Four men were executed in Indonesia on 29 July for drug-related offences. Nine other men and one woman received a last-minute temporary stay of execution after they were also taken to the execution grounds.

Urgent Action: Human rights defender at risk of torture in Pakistan

Human rights defender Wahid Baloch may have been subjected to enforced disappearance by state security forces in Karachi, Pakistan, on the afternoon of 26 July. His family does not know where he is or what has happened to him.

Urgent Action update: Appeal court issues verdict in 'Abdali Cell' case

A Kuwaiti appeal court issued its verdict on in the “Abdali Cell” case. It upheld a life sentence, a five-year prison sentence and a death sentence against individuals convicted of charges including "spying for Iran and Hizbullah”.

Urgent Action update: Chinese Human Rights Lawyer at risk of torture

Lawyer Ren Quanniu was detained on 9 July on suspicion of “picking quarrels and provoking trouble” after voicing concerns about his client’s condition in detention. He hasn’t had access to a lawyer since 11 July. He is at risk of torture and other ill-treatment.

Urgent Action update: Detained South Sudanese newspaper editor charged

Alfred Taban, prominent journalist and chief editor of the daily English newspaper, Juba Monitor, has been charged with ‘publishing or communicating false statements prejudicial to Southern Sudan’ and ‘undermining the authority of or insulting the president’.

Urgent Action update: Freed Bahraini prisoner of conscience back in court

Bahraini prisoner of conscience Ebrahim Sharif was released from Jaw prison having served a one-year prison sentence over a peaceful speech he made in July 2015. The prosecution have appealed the verdict and he is due back in court on 13 October.

Urgent Action: Protestor seriously injured by water cannon in South Korea

Baek Nam-gi was injured critically by the use of a water cannon during a demonstration in Seoul on 14 November 2015. He suffered brain damage and remains unconscious but his condition is deteriorating. None of the officials involved has faced disciplinary action.

Urgent Action: Mother pleads to find her disappeared son in Ukraine

Dmytro Koroliov was given a suspended five-year sentence in 2015 for joining the separatist forces in eastern Ukraine. His mother claims he was abducted by the Security Service on 3 August 2015 and that he has been held in secret detention since.
