Bahraini human rights defender Nabeel Rajab’s trial began on 12 July on charges of “spreading false rumours in times of war” and “insulting public authorities” in relation to tweets he published in 2015.

Bahraini human rights defender Nabeel Rajab’s trial began on 12 July on charges of “spreading false rumours in times of war” and “insulting public authorities”. On the first day of the trial a new charge of “insulting a foreign country” was also levelled against him. His case has been adjourned to 2 August.

Urgent Action: Offices of Caceres case lawyers burglarized

The offices of Honduran organization Broad Movement for Justice and Dignity were burglarized on 13 July. The burglar stole computers with sensitive information on high-profile cases they represent, including the assassination of human rights defender Berta Cáceres. MADJ believes this incident is related to their work defending human rights.

Three human rights defenders affiliated with the organization, TRACKS for Training and Human Development (TRACKS), remain arbitrarily detained without charge in Khartoum.

Urgent Action: Chinese lawyer detained for defending client

Ren Quanniu was detained on 9 July on suspicion of “picking quarrels and provoking trouble” after he expressed concerns about his client and asking for an investigation into her condition while she was detained. He is at risk of torture and other ill-treatment.

Urgent Action update: Farmer's freedom of movement restricted in Mozambique

Benedito Sabãois concerned for his safety and is unable to leave Mozambique as people believed to be members of the secret service police confiscated his documents. He is unable to meet his daily living costs in Maputo and has had to rely on the support of some local organizations.

Urgent Action: Angolan youth activist must be released

Angolan youth activist, Francisco Mapanda, was charged with contempt of Court and subjected to a summary trial. He was sentenced to eight months in prison on 28 March.

Urgent Action update: Six protesters released in Algeria, one remains imprisoned

Six men serving a one-year prison sentence for taking part in a peaceful protest in late December 2015 in Tamanrasset, southern Algeria, were released as part of a presidential pardon on 5 July. One other man, Dahmane Kerami, remains imprisoned.

Urgent Action update: In Greece, Syrians remain at risk of return to Turkey

The first two known Syrian refugees that became at risk of being forcibly returned to Turkey under the illegal EU-Turkey deal are challenging the decision on their asylum application before the Greek courts.
