Prisoner of conscience U Gambira was released on 1 July after all charges against him were dropped by courts in Myanmar.

Prominent human rights defender Valentina Cherevatenko was informed on 24 June that she has been declared a suspect under the “foreign agents law”. She may face up to two years in prison.

Congolese political opposition member Paulin Makaya is facing five years’ imprisonment and a fine of up to five million francs CFA (approximately $USD 8,345) for taking part in an unauthorized protest, if convicted.

Bidun human rights defender ‘Abdulhakim al-Fadhli remains in prison to serve a separate sentence of three months. He was beaten by policemen as he was transferred from the court to Kuwait’s Central Prison.

Paul Kikukama Ndjokolo is set to stand trial before a military court and risks a prison sentence solely for having distributed a civil society press release to police officers. Amnesty International calls for his unconditional and immediate release.

Professor Huit Mulongo is facing trumped up charges of possession of a military weapon and ammunition. He will be tried before a military court, despite being a civilian.

The Maldives Supreme Court upheld the conviction and death sentence against 22 year old Hussain Humaam Ahmed for the murder of MP Afrasheem Ali in 2012, despite serious concerns about fair trial proceedings in his case.

Iranian trade unionist, Jafar Azimzadeh, lost consciousness on 27 June following a two-month-long hunger strike. He is at risk of being returned to Tehran’s Evin Prison, where his life may be at risk. He is a prisoner of conscience.
