Urgent Action: Chinese activist in danger after 'suicide attempt'

Detained activist Xing Wangli is in a critical condition with severe injuries to his head and lungs after what authorities claim was a failed suicide attempt.

Urgent Action update: Bangladeshi political leader executed

Mir Quasem Ali, a senior member of the political party Jamaat-e-Islami, was executed on 3 September. The Supreme Court rejected his review petition on 30 August and he did not seek clemency from the President.

Omani prisoner of conscience Saeed Jaddad was released from prison on 26 August, having served nine months of a one-year prison sentence under Oman’s cybercrimes law for a blog he wrote in October 2014.

Urgent Action: Detained pastor on hunger strike since 8 August in Vietnam

Pastor Nguyễn Công Chính is a Vietnamese prisoner of conscience serving an 11-year sentence. He has been on hunger strike since 8 August in protest at abusive treatment, denial of rights and lack of response to complaints by officials. He is in poor health.

Urgent Action update: Thirteen anti-slavery activists convicted in Mauritania

13 Mauritanian anti-slavery activists who are members of the anti-slavery organization Initiative for the Resurgence of the Abolitionist Movement in Mauritania (IRA) have been sentenced to between three and 15 years in prison.

Urgent Action good news: Egyptian human rights defender Malek Adly released

Human rights defender Malek Adly has been released on 28 August after he spent 115 days in detention. The court did not set bail as a condition of his release but required him to specify a place of residence as he faces an ongoing criminal investigation.

The Supreme Court has rejected the latest appeal of Mir Quasem Ali and upheld his death sentence. The only remaining avenue available to him is to seek clemency from the President.
