Human rights lawyer Robert Sann Aung has been receiving death threats and insulting messages since the assassination of another prominent lawyer in Myanmar.

Two days after Fidel Castro’s death, a family of four human rights defenders were arrested in Holguín, south-east Cuba. They received a one-year sentence, and the three siblings are currently on hunger strike.

Dr Ali Esa Mansoor al-Ekri, a Bahraini consultant surgeon and activist, has been released after completing his five-year prison sentence. He was a prisoner of conscience.

Paul Storey, aged 32, is scheduled to be executed in Texas on 12 April. Among those who are calling for clemency are the parents of the man he was convicted of killing in 2006. One of the jurors who voted for the death sentence also opposes the execution.

Activist, Htin Kyaw is again being detained solely for the peaceful exercise of his human rights. Arrested in October 2016 for his criticism of the Myanmar justice system, his next court hearing is on 5 April 2017 and, if convicted, he faces up to two years’ imprisonment.

Chinese activist Dong Guangping will be tried in April 2017 for “subverting state power” and “crossing the national border illegally”.

Journalist and activist Khudoberdi Nurmatov (also known as Ali Feruz) is at risk of being forcibly returned from Russia to Uzbekistan.

Maldivian social media activist Thayyib Shaheem was arrested on 16 March, and has since been detained in Dhoonidhoo island prison.

Noori, a 21-year-old Syrian refugee, continues to be unlawfully detained in a police station on the Greek island of Lesvos. He has been in detention since 9 September and is awaiting to find out whether he will be forcibly returned to Turkey under the EU-Turkey deal. The uncertainty he has been facing for months and the poor detention conditions are having a negative impact on his wellbeing.
