Urgent Action: Hundreds killed under Philippines' new President

Hundreds of criminal suspects allegedly linked to the drug trade have been killed since June 30, the day President Duterte took office in the Philippines. Some of these cases may amount to extrajudicial executions.

Bidun human rights defender ‘Abdulhakim al-Fadhli was released from Kuwait Central prison on 2 August after serving the remainder of a three month prison sentence for “misusing his phone”.

Jailed Chinese Human Rights Defender Yang Maodong (better known by his pen name Guo Feixiong) has been on hunger strike since 9 May in protest of his ill-treatment by the authorities.

Urgent Action update: Nabeel Rajab's trial postponed to 5th September

Bahraini prisoner of conscience Nabeel Rajab appeared before the High Criminal Court on 2 August. His trial was adjourned to 5 September, and his continued detention and referral for medical checks was ordered. His lawyers’ request for his release on bail has been rejected again.

Urgent Action update: Iranian youth's execution halted, still at risk

The execution of 20-year-old Iranian youth, Alireza Tajiki, has been postponed again following renewed public pressure. Despite this, Alireza Tajiki, who was 15 years old when arrested, remains at risk of execution as the authorities have yet to quash his death sentence and grant him a fair retrial.

Urgent action update: Two year sentence for taking part in a protest

Congolese political opposition member Paulin Makaya was sentenced to two years imprisonment and a fine of 3,800 Euros for taking part in an unauthorized protest. Paulin Makaya is a prisoner of conscience.

Urgent Action: Whereabouts of Burundian journalist unknown

Jean Bigirimana was last seen in Bugarama, Muramvya province, on 22 July. There are indications that Jean Bigirimana was arrested by security forces. The police spokesperson has however denied these allegations.
