Stansted 15 tell their story through film
The Stansted 15 feature in an independent documentary by award-winning filmmaker, Sue Clayton.
The film follows the 15 UK human rights defenders as they take action against a deportation flight at Stansted airport, and their reactions to their arrest and prosecution. We attended the trial, concerned with the disproportionately harsh charges and wrote to the Attorney General expressing our concern.
That year more than 11,000 people sent messages of solidarity to the Stansted 15 with Amnesty as part of Write for Rights. Afterward one of the defendants wrote “The messages of support and solidarity we received, some 11,000 in total, meant everything to us, and reminded us that we were not alone at a time that we really needed it."
Update: On 29 January 2021 their conviction was overturned by the Court of Appeal. The judge confirmed that they should not have been prosecuted under this offence because their conduct did not satisfy the various elements of it, adding “There was in truth, no case to answer.”
Please note that not all views expressed in the film are necessarily those of Amnesty International.
