SMS terms and conditions

Introduction

Text messages are a fast and low-cost way to ask you to support a petition, stand up for people whose rights are being abused and occasionally to raise funds.

Our SMS terms and conditions explain the rules that govern our communications with you as part of the SMS network, known as ‘Pocket Protest’, and cover:

•    Joining the network

•    How we use your information

•    Who we share your information with

•    How much it costs

•    Unsubscribing from the network

If you have any questions about these rules or would like more information please contact our Supporter Communications Team via sct@amnesty.org.uk or on 020 7033 1777 (Monday-Friday, 9am-6pm).

Joining the SMS network

You must be aged 14 or over to join the SMS network. Under 18's, please ask the bill-payer's permission before joining and provide a date of birth in the format: DD/MM/YYYY.

By joining the SMS network, you are agreeing to future communication by text message (including urgent actions and occasional requests for donations) from:

•    Amnesty International United Kingdom Section, a limited company registered in England and Wales (01735872), and

•    Amnesty International UK Section Charitable Trust, a charity registered in England and Wales (1051681) and Scotland (SC039534).

Our SMS network is only available within the mobile network of the UK. If you are replying to messages from outside of the UK, you may get charged by the local service provider and Amnesty International UK will not receive details of any actions and donations you have taken.

How we use your information

To comply with UK data protection rules, Amnesty International UK must have a legal justification for collecting and using your personal information.

We will always ask for your consent to send you text messages as part of the SMS network.

These text messages may invite you to take action on behalf of people in urgent need of your support, provide you with updates on the campaigns you took action on and invite you to get involved in important campaign moments and our fundraising appeals.

We will also rely on our legitimate interests in promoting and protecting human rights to contact you if you have joined our SMS network or have taken a text-based action. For example, we will call you occasionally to ask you to make a financial gift to support our work.  Please note: Under 18's will not be asked for financial donations.

If you prefer not to have your personal information used in this way, you can unsubscribe from the SMS network to no longer receive our text messages and / or phone calls.

Who we share your information with

At Amnesty International UK, we believe that you have a right to privacy and we take defending that right very seriously. As detailed in our privacy notice, we do not sell your details to anyone, nor will we display your mobile phone number on any petitions or letters.

Our SMS network is provided by a third-party mobile platform provider, instaGiv, who will collect your details on our behalf and pass them to us. instaGiv is a trading name of ClearCourse Business Services Limited, registered under Company No. 06912469

We may also share your mobile phone number with professional fundraising agencies who will call you on our behalf and who help us to deliver our inspiring telephone campaigns. Many of our calls are carried out by Amnesty International UK staff.

If you prefer not to have your personal information used in this way, you can unsubscribe from the SMS network.

How much it costs

You will not be charged for text messages you receive from Amnesty International UK. Text messages to 70505, 84902, and other non-premium short-codes are charged at your standard network rate. Please note, on some phone packages, these texts are not covered by inclusive message allowances or bundles, and as such will be billed separately.

We will always be clear if we are asking for a donation by text. If you respond to a text message asking for a donation, you will be charged the donation amount stated, plus the cost of one standard message. Amnesty International UK will receive 100% of your donation.

How to unsubscribe

Text STOP to 70505 at any time to unsubscribe from text messages from Amnesty International UK.

Text NOCALL to 70505 if you prefer not to be called but want to still receive text messages from Amnesty International UK.

Please note: unsubscribe texts will be charged at your standard network rate. To unsubscribe with no fee please email sct@amnesty.org.uk or call 020 7033 1777 (Monday-Friday, 9am-6pm).

I have mistakenly sent Amnesty International UK a SMS donation

Should you send a premium SMS keyword to our 70505 shortcode by mistake, please contact your network provider to obtain a refund as quickly as possible. The donation will appear on your bill as a premium donation under the shortcode 70520.  Amnesty International UK won’t automatically receive your donation from your phone network provider as they perform background checks before distributing donations to charities, which can take up to three months. Amnesty International UK cannot be held liable for any costs incurred by this mistake.
