Urgent Action Update: 13 activists charged, held incommunicado in Mauritania

Four more activists from the anti-slavery organization Initiative for the Resurgence of the Abolitionist Movement in Mauritania (IRA) were arrested on 8 and 9 July, just days after the arrest of nine others.

Loreom Joseph Longie who had been arbitrarily detained at the National Security Service (NSS) headquarters in Jebel neighbourhood since September 2014, passed away on 17 July.

Urgent Action: Religious scholar detained without charge in Sudan

Yousef Abdallah Abker, a religious scholar, was arrested on 14 July by security agents after a sermon he gave in early July. He has been detained since then without any charge.

Urgent Action update: Congress vote a step back for abortion rights

The Dominican Republic Congress voted on a new reform of the Criminal Code on 19 July. This new code regresses the rights of women and girls as it now only allows abortion where the pregnancy poses a risk to the life of a pregnant woman or girl.

Urgent Action: Review detention in Russian psychiatric institution

A young man with no history of mental health concerns has been detained in a psychiatric hospital and forcibly treated following an argument with his father. The relevant court order was issued following a hearing that violated his right to a fair trial.

Urgent Action: Newspaper editor detained in South Sudan

Alfred Taban, a prominent journalist and chief editor of the Juba Monitor, was arrested on 16 July and is being held at the National Security Service Headquarters. He is at risk of torture and other ill-treatment.
